Why Reverse Engineer?
3D scanning produces a point map, or “mesh”, of an object’s surface that makes no distinction between features such as faces or holes. For many applications, the mesh needs to be converted into a solid model, such as an IGES or STEP file, for the majority of applications. Using reverse engineering software, our engineers overlay CAD primitives onto the regions and features of the mesh, ultimately creating a solid model from the scan.
These “dumb” solids can be used with most manufacturing processes to replicate your part directly. They are, however, difficult to modify should you need to change the design of your part. But with the “Export Conversion” feature, your dumb solid is procedurally re-created in the CAD package of your choosing, giving you a project file for your part with a full feature tree.
